Our lives are in perpetual motion. From the tiny cells in our bodies, to the planets and solar system we live in… Everything is moving. In our fast past world we sometimes are in such a hurry to quench our next thirst, that we do not take time to taste the water on our lips. Thankfully yoga and meditation give me a space and time to slow everything down and get my spinning plates of life under control. This week look for Zen in each pose and during the brief moment (pause) between breaths. In time you will be able to incorporate this awakened freedom into your daily lives. What is Zen you ask? Now that is a good question… The ancient Buddhist’s described Zen as trying to catch a fish with your bare hands. It immediately wiggles between your fingers and slips away before you have complete control of it. Zen is conceptual and is not bound by words and letters. To describe Zen as freedom, fluidity or perfection is a good start, but in defining Zen, you can limit its true potential. In sanskrit the word for Zen is dhyana, meaning concentration, dynamic stillness and contemplation. When you find it, you are no longer searching for answers externally, but the student journey's within to reach the moving spirit of the Buddha, his own self nature. So this week look for Zen in your practice and in your daily lives. It may be a beautiful cloud formation or a majestic sunset, it may be a deep emotion you suddenly feel in savasana, or something so subtle as that brief pause between breaths. Just know it is there waiting for you to be present to enjoy its power. |
